Controlling Mosquitos
I‘ve written about controlling mosquitoes. In the post, Summer is here, and so are the Mosquitoes! I share that my backyard borders a wooded area ripe for mosquito reproduction. And Buzz Off! Mosquito Control for a Bite-Free Summer, where I explain how susceptible my wife is to mosquitoes, “My wife is the one who asked about mosquito control. She is mosquito candy. We can both be sitting outside on the back patio, and I don’t even hear a buzz as she slaps her arm, shows me three mosquito bite bumps, and goes inside. Yeah, mosquitoes are attracted to my wife.”
So, why one more post about mosquitoes? Because I want to cover what we’ve learned about controlling mosquitoes. Berger Hargis completed a mosquito treatment on our property this morning. This is the fourth year we’ve hired them to do this, and it’s made a huge impact. Initially, we were concerned for the feral cats and other critters that live in the woods behind our home (and in our yard). We were assured that Berger Hargis uses a broad-spectrum insecticide that is safe for pets and can even be used indoors.
Tips for Controlling Mosquitos
Mosquitoes lay their larvae in standing water, and it doesn’t take much. Something as small as a soda bottle left outdoors can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Planters, old tires, and even toys are mosquito incubators. Another culprit can be your gutters; be sure to clean them out. Old, wet leaves and small puddles in your gutters formed by blocking debris are perfect breeding sites for mosquito larvae.
I have three fountains in my backyard that I treat with larvicide pellets containing Bacillus thuringiensis, a natural bacterium that kills mosquito larvae and is totally safe for pets, birds, and fish.
If you have a pool, keep it circulating and up to date with treatments.
What the Experts Have to Say
According to a joint statement from the CDC and the EPA in ” Success in Mosquito Control: An Integrated Approach,“The greatest impact on mosquito populations will occur when they are concentrated, immobile, and accessible. This emphasis focuses on habitat management and controlling the immature stages (egg, larva, and pupa) before the mosquitoes emerge as adults. This approach maximizes the effectiveness of pesticide application and minimizes the use from widespread pesticide application. Larvicides target larvae in the breeding habitat before they can mature into adult mosquitoes and disperse. Larvicide treatment of breeding habitats helps reduce the adult mosquito population in nearby areas.”
The bottom line is that controlling mosquitoes takes a coordinated effort, and Berger Hargis is ready to help.
