Buzz Off! Mosquito Control for a Bite-Free Summer
My wife is the one who asked about mosquito control. She is mosquito candy. We can both be sitting outside on the back patio, and I don’t even hear a buzz as she slaps her arm, shows me three mosquito bite bumps, and goes inside. Yea, mosquitoes are attracted to my wife.
A Mosquito Bite Can Be More than an Itch
Yes, mosquito bites can be much more than an itchy red bump. Mosquitoes carry and spread diseases.
“Mosquito-borne diseases are those spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Diseases that are spread to people by mosquitoes include Zika virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, dengue, and malaria. Although people may not become sick after a bite from an infected mosquito, some people have a mild, short-term illness or (rarely) severe or long-term illness. Severe cases of mosquito-borne diseases can cause death.” — CDC.gov — Mosquito-Borne Diseases.
Berger Hargis for the Buzz Off!
We asked Berger Hargis about mosquito control last year. Our first question, okay, it was my wife’s, was, is it safe for pets? We have a small woods at the back of our yard where feral cats live. Two have been there seven years, since they were kittens. We’ve named them, taken them to the vet, feed them daily, and have heated huts for them, but they’re not our cats – right?
The insect control specialist at Berger Hargis told us they used a broad-spectrum insecticide that was safe for pets, and he told me it could even be used indoors. Last summer, we had a total of five feral cats that we fed daily. None of the cats showed any signs of distress from the insecticide.
Enjoying the Back Patio Again
This year we’ve signed up again for three applications of the insecticide. Like I mentioned, it’s a broad-spectrum insecticide, which means it’s effective against many insects, not only mosquitoes. Last year mosquito control worked so well that my wife and I could enjoy time outside sitting on the back patio together, under an umbrella, watching the feral cats romp in the woods. We’re looking forward to more time outdoors this year.
