What Did You Say?
If you weren’t already aware, there are many factors that go into how we, as humans, interpret communication. During these rather strange times, we are especially learning that some of the things we say carry more weight than what meets the eye. Our words aren’t the only things that make a statement. Quite often, our actions, tone, inflection, punctuation, and facial expressions do the bulk of the message-sending.
As we are all undergoing drastic changes within our day-to-day lives, it is important that we take our communication seriously. The more that we begin to include technology and digital work into our society, the more important that clear and rightly understood communication becomes. You see, our communication methods are adapting and transforming before our eyes, and if we aren’t careful, we could fail to adapt and transform with them.
Out With the Old
Long gone are the days of visiting someone face-to-face to send a message or tell them something. Gone are the days of hand-written letters and landline phone calls. What we are seeing is a society that is focused on the quickest, most convenient way of communication. We are now able to have full conversations with people halfway across the world from the comfort of our own homes. This is quite an amazing reality, but it also requires a great deal of caution. Now that communication methods are becoming more concise and convenient, we must give extra care, not to the words we say. Much of the natural cues for interpretation (facial expression, inflection, tone, action, etc.) are sacrificed when we communicate via email or text. Our words bear weight, and we are seeing the weight of our words growing as we continue to grow away from physical interpretive cues.
What to Do?
What does this mean? Why does this matter? What do I even do about this? Well…for starters, you can choose your words wisely. Start to consider your word choice more intentionally. Think twice before you click “send.” Try to place yourself in the recipient’s shoes and make sure that the message was received clearly and concisely with no room for error. The last thing you want to do is leave beauty in the eyes of the beholder. You want your words to be interpreted how you wrote them. Don’t let the transformation of communication methods impact you negatively. Don’t lose your message.
Take your time, think carefully, and click send confidently.
