Small Business is a Big Deal
Yes, small business is a big deal. Here at Berger Hargis, we work with hundreds of small businesses, and we know they greatly impact our community. Small businesses in America are anything but small. They may not be as visible as larger companies with advertising budgets. They may not have a public relations or marketing department, but their significance shouldn’t be discounted, because small businesses in central Indiana and in the USA are huge.
What is a Small Business?
The SBA defines small businesses as having “firm revenue (ranging from $1 million to over $40 million) and by employment (from 100 to over 1,500 employees).” Which, I have to say sounds big to me.
Small Business is a Big Deal
So, how big is small business in America?
According to the SBE Council (The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council ), small business makes a significant impact:
● “Small businesses have accounted for 62% of net new job creation since 1995.
● “From 2000-2019, small businesses generated about two-thirds of net new jobs.
● Small businesses employ 46.8% of private-sector employees.
● Small businesses created 1.6 million new jobs in 2019, with firms employing fewer than 20 workers generating 1.1 million new jobs.
What Does Small Business Mean to America?
Small businesses have contributed largely to the current low national unemployment numbers. Small businesses have impacted the economy by reducing unemployment, exporting goods, and creating patents, as no other group has. The diversity of small businesses avoids the calamity of having all your eggs in one basket, as experienced by Detroit and other cities when the American auto industry suffered a decline nearly 20 years ago. Small businesses are the incubators of innovation and the forecasters of the future in American business. Remember that Apple, Microsoft, and Ford were all once small businesses.
Shop Local
As important as small businesses are to the American economy and way of life, they deserve our patronage. The next time you’re thinking about a purchase, take the time to investigate the small businesses in your area that offer the product or service you desire. We’re all looking for the best product at the best price, but sometimes, there are things more important than price, such as honest local customer service, supporting the community, building relationships, and establishing trust. At Berger Hargis, we appreciate and support small businesses. We think small business is a big deal.
