Should Your Trees and Bushes Be Sprayed?
Should your trees and bushes be sprayed? Good question. Many property owners, both residential and commercial, have never thought about having trees and bushes sprayed. I know until I did a little research, I didn’t. The exception might be people with fruit trees who annually spray them. However, for many of us, including me, it’s not always on our landscaping radar.
At the same time, for many of us, it should be. If your trees and bushes have shown signs of damage from insects or diseases, then a seasonal tree and shrub pest management program could be the answer.
Should Your Trees and Bushes Be Sprayed?
Trees and bushes are a long-term investment. They can live 50 years or longer and take years to mature. At the same time, insects and diseases can destroy, damage, or stunt them in a single season.
An Example
“I have a burning bush hedge that is about 20-25 years old. Until (4) years ago, they were always healthy/attractive and had no pest problems. In late spring/early summer, at the onset of prolonged hot weather, almost overnight, I noticed their foliage had an abnormal copper cast, and the foliage started dropping — the slightest touch resulted in the drop of many leaves. The shrubs were saturated with a fine, silky web, and there were a lot of pinhead-sized insects on the shrubs. I presumed the things were some type of mite. The following year, I sprayed the shrubs 2-3 times, starting in spring. I had no problems with pests at any time that year.” — Purdue Extension Services.
“Investing in our seasonal tree and shrub pest management program will provide optimal results in the prevention and treatment of problematic insects and diseases. This application will help with the control of leaf chewing, sucking, and leaf-mining insects.” — Berger Hargis Insect Spray
