13 Fun Spring Facts to Spring on You

13 Fun Spring Facts to Spring on You

Here are a few fun spring facts to help get you ready for spring. It won’t be long before spring has sprung. I know it doesn’t look like it now but spring will be here soon. Yesterday evening I sat on my back patio, next to a blazing fire, wrapped in a sleeping bag, watching snow flurries. When will spring get here? I’m looking forward to spring, hikes in the woods, time in my flower beds, and lounging in my backyard hammock with a good book. Spring is the season to take in the outdoors, fresh air, sunlight, and warm breezes. With that in mind, I thought it might be fun to share some fun spring facts because spring will eventually come to Indiana.

13 Fun Spring Facts

  • When it’s spring in the northern hemisphere, it’s autumn in the southern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere, spring begins mid-March and ends mid-June. In the southern hemisphere, spring begins in August and ends in November. So, if you wanted to chase spring around the world, you could have nearly eight months per year of spring.
  • For us, the spring equinox for 2022 is Sunday, March 20, marking the astronomical Northern Hemisphere’s first day of spring.
  • The word equinox derives from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night), so it means “equal day and night.”
  • On the equinox, the length of day and night are nearly equal in all parts of the world.
  • The spring equinox doesn’t fall on the same day every year because the Earth’s rotation around the sun isn’t exactly 365 days.
  • Fall and spring equinoxes are the only two days of the year when the sun rises due east and sets due west.
  • The spring equinox signals six months of daylight on the North Pole and six months of darkness on the South Pole.
  • Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.
  • Spring tides have nothing to do with the seasons. They happen twice per lunar month year-round.
  • The ancient Egyptians built the Great Sphinx facing directly towards the rising sun on the spring equinox.
  • If you stand on the equator on either equinox, the sun will appear directly overhead in a straight line.
  • There is more daylight on spring equinox because the Earth’s axis is tilted toward the sun and because of daylight savings time. Ben Franklin proposed Daylight Savings time in 1784.
  • The word spring has more than a dozen meanings and can be used as a verb or a noun.

 Spring has Sprung

Did I spring a few new and interesting spring facts on you? When I was researching this, a couple of these bullet points surprised me. I hope you enjoyed this; in the meantime, I’m working on spending eight months a year chasing spring. I mean, I could write from anywhere, right. So, I could spring free to write right all spring.

If you’d like to get a jump on spring lawn care here’s a 9-point Spring Lawn Care Checklist to get you started.
