What Does Thanksgiving Mean to You?
So, what does Thanksgiving mean to you? Is it time with family, football, parades, and turkey, or is there more to it? What are you thankful for?
For several years, my wife and I delivered meals on Thanksgiving Day. Our kids and grandkids all lived in Florida and we were on our own. It started when the organization that made and distributed the meals issued a call to action for drivers. Cars lined up, and then when it was your turn, you’d be given meals in boxes and a list of names and addresses.
We Got More Than We Gave
We saw single parents with excited children, thankful elderly couples, and more. I don’t share this because I want to brag or think my wife and I are special – just the opposite. It taught us more than we ever gave. All we did was drive around and deliver meals. What we got was a life lesson.
Yes, family, football, and turkey are fun. Go, Lions! However, Thanksgiving should be a lot more than that. After our experiences delivering meals, we became much more thankful for what we had. I’d given lip service to the idea that there’s always someone who has less than you, so you should be grateful for what you have. But after seeing some of those people, it became real.
How Can You Be Thankful on Thanksgiving?
Here’s an idea my wife came up with. We’ve been together for almost 40 years. We each have all we need and what we want, which makes it difficult for us to buy presents for each other. My wife’s plan was to donate to charities in each other’s names. On Thanksgiving, we tell each other about the charities we’d like to give a gift to, and we make donations.
Another way to show gratitude to the community is to involve your business. Berger Hargis has provided landscaping to many in need. We’ve supported charities with donations and volunteering. It’s not only a wonderful way to show gratitude but also a rewarding way to build a team.
