High Winds and Fallen Trees
I’ve dealt with fallen trees several times over the last 20 years. However, dealing with the aftermath of a fallen tree was never easier than when I lost a tree last week. I live at the bottom of a wooded hill. Trees have fallen and taken out parts of my wooden privacy fence (not last week, it missed my new fence!). Trees have fallen into my side yard and taken days for me and my chainsaw to clear; at least I had plenty of wood for the fire pit.
Fifteen years ago, lightning hit a large Walnut tree behind my house, and the top 20 or 30 feet broke off and fell onto my fence, taking out two sections. The remainder of the tree, which is a good 50 feet, rests against a Cottonwood tree. It’s been there for 15 years, and the winds haven’t budged it one inch. Last week, when I lost most of a Redbud tree I had planted 20 years ago, I didn’t hesitate. I called Berger Hargis. My days of cleaning up fallen trees are over. This team did great work, and the price was more than fair.
The Team
When the team arrived, they walked with me to the fallen tree and asked about my expectations. Then, the supervisor, Nate, offered a few suggestions, including trimming two maple trees with large limbs hanging over my fence. Nate looked at the fallen tree and asked me If I’d like to save any of it. He pointed out an off shoot that he thought he could save and explained how he would cut around it. I thanked him, as I said, I planned the tree 20 years ago. I was attached to it. Redbuds are my favorite tree.
The team got out their tools, chainsaws, extension clippers, a cart, and more. They worked as a team, quickly collecting the cut branches and limbs and carting them to their truck and trailer. Nate asked if I’d like to keep the dead wood for my fire pit. I liked the idea, and Nate went further, cutting the pieces into small burnable logs and stacking them next to my fire pit. Wow.
When they finished cutting and gathering, they blew away the leaves and debris, raked it up, and carted it away. It looks great. The Maple trees Nate suggested trimming not only protected my fence, but it looked great, and it let more light into my flower beds! As the team packed up, Nate asked me if he could trim a branch from the Bradford pear tree in my front yard. The branch was touching my streetlamp. I said yes and thanked him again.
Overall, it was a great experience. The team did in a couple of hours what would have taken me days. And when the bill came, I was pleasantly surprised that it was less than I expected.
