Landscape Design Makes A Difference
As I look out my window at the snow-covered lawn there’s not much to see of my landscape design. Besides, it’s below zero with a wind chill in the minus 20s. So, I’m not spending much time outdoors. However, spring is right around the corner and whether it’s commercial or residential landscape design, now is a good time to start thinking about what you want.
Landscape Design Makes A Difference
Good landscape design can make a commercial property stand out and be more attractive to clients and prospects while bad or no landscape design can detract to the point of chasing customers away. Have you ever visited a commercial property and been “put off” by the poor landscape design? I have, and it brought doubt about the entire operation.
You don’t have to be a landscape design expert because here at Berger Hargis we are pros, and better yet our consultation is free and that includes multiple visits!
Site Visits and Consultation
Our first visit usually includes discussing your vision and ideas, reviewing your budget, as well as property assessment, measurements, and location photography.
Following the first visit, our landscape experts will produce an architectural drawing of your proposed landscape design. Additionally, we’ll compile a list of plants that will thrive in your area. Once completed, a second visit will be scheduled.
Next, we’ll review the architectural drawing, discuss plant types and their placement, and set a tentative timetable for project completion (dependent on plant availability and weather).
After the installation we’ll provide you with a detailed list of all the plants and their specific requirements.
What Does Landscape Design Involve?
Landscape design involves more than planning, arranging, and modifying outdoor spaces to create aesthetically pleasing and functional environments. It combines elements of art and science to enhance the natural beauty of a space while addressing practical considerations. Here are some key aspects of landscape design:
Site Analysis
Understanding the characteristics of the site, including topography, soil quality, climate, and existing vegetation, is crucial. This analysis helps our designers make informed decisions about plant selection and layout.
Functional Considerations
Landscape designers must consider the intended use of the space. This could include areas for relaxation, entertainment, gardening, or other specific purposes. Designers aim to create spaces that meet the needs and preferences of the users.
Plant Selection
Choosing appropriate plants is a fundamental aspect of landscape design. Factors such as climate, soil conditions, and maintenance requirements influence plant selection. Designers often consider the color, texture, and form of plants to achieve a balanced and visually appealing composition.
Hardscape Elements
Elements like pathways, patios, decks, and other non-plant features are essential in landscape design. These elements provide structure, define spaces, and contribute to the overall functionality of the outdoor area.
Water Features
Ponds, fountains, streams, or other water features can add a dynamic and soothing element to a landscape. They also contribute to biodiversity by attracting wildlife.
Lighting
Proper lighting design enhances the visual appeal of a landscape during the evening hours. It also serves practical purposes by improving safety and security.
Sustainability
Modern landscape designs incorporate sustainable practices, such as water-efficient irrigation, use of native plants, and environmentally friendly materials. Sustainable landscapes aim to minimize environmental impact and resource consumption.
Maintenance Considerations
Designers often consider the ongoing maintenance needs of the landscape. A well-designed landscape should be manageable and sustainable in the long term.
Whether it’s for residential, commercial, or public spaces, landscape design is a multidisciplinary field that requires creativity, knowledge of plants, and an understanding of environmental factors.
