Is your grass going to seed? If so, you might be worrying about what to do. In this post, we will be discussing what exactly is happening when your grass goes to seed and what you should be doing as a result.

 

What’s Going On?

Your lawn is flowering.  Cool season turf grass goes through a process in mid-spring where it flowers and begins the process of setting seed.  These immature seed heads make the turf look “feathery” and can detract from the overall dark green color of your turf.  The flower is borne on a stiff stalk that stands up above the leaves and is usually present for 2-3 weeks depending on the type of grass present.  This stalk is wiry and difficult to cut cleanly and can leave a ragged end even when mower blades are very sharp.  It is a natural function of the grass plant and it is their way of trying to continue to survive.

 

Is it Bad?

Homeowners can rest assured that grass going to seed is perfectly healthy. It is the natural process for grass to reproduce itself. As unsightly as it may look, there is no real way to prevent the grass from going to seed during this time. Grass going to seed is a good sign the plant is actually healthy and growing well. What Do You Do?

While there aren’t any drastic measures for you to take during this process, you can be taking care of your grass to allow for optimal health and growth.

Mowing

• Mow the tops of your lawn leaves every 5-10 days to remove the seed heads and help with the overall health of your lawn. The appearance of your lawn may still change slightly from the flowering grass, this is natural. The change in the appearance of your lawn is not a result of poor/dull mower blades.

Watering

• Make sure that your lawn is receiving an adequate amount of water by checking the soil moisture. Don’t overwater and don’t underwater.

 

Grass going to seed might look unappealing, but it is a natural and healthy process that grass goes through during this time of the year. Don’t panic, just continue to take great care of your lawn.
