Lessons from Mom
In light of the recent Mother’s Day celebration, it’s appropriate to see what we can learn from those rockstar moms out there.
When it comes to customer relations and communication, we’ve all got room to grow. We all seem to fall short in one way or another. This week, we had the opportunity to celebrate and thank some special people (mothers) that could give insight on how to relate with others, especially our customers.
It’s no secret that moms are pretty amazing. I mean, we literally wouldn’t be alive without them… Now, I’m no mom myself, but I do see the seemingly magical abilities that mothers have. Maybe we could all learn a little something from those wonderful mothers! Let’s take a look at three spectacular traits that mothers seem to nail time after time!
Patience
the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or
suffering without getting angry or upset
Mothers seem to have a great deal of patience when it comes to rather tough situations. It’s as though they are naturally gifted to see the best in people and carry that into how they respond. They are gentle and caring as they approach difficult situations. They are loving and kind, even to those that might be in the wrong. If a situation isn’t going their way, the last thing they do is let others know. As we go about our daily lives, look to the patient example of mothers, and try to apply it.
Sympathy
understanding between people; common feeling
If you’re anything like me, you might struggle a little bit when it comes to expressing sympathy (I’m very much the “rub some dirt on it” type). Mothers, on the other hand, are pretty amazing when it comes to sympathy. Even if they haven’t felt your exact pain, they can somehow manage to resonate with you. They are great at recognizing the needs of others and expressing their care and concern for them. Whether the customer or coworker is in a place you can directly relate with or not, it is your duty to sympathize and share the struggle with them.
Selflessness
concern more with the needs and wishes of others than
with one’s own
We’re all naturally selfish, at least to some extent. It seems, however, that mothers have an innate ability to care for others before they care for themselves. It’s quite impressive how well they are able to take care of and support others before they even consider taking care of themselves. We could all learn a little something from the selflessness of mothers when it comes to dealing with coworkers and customers.
What Can We Do?
I get it. Our moms aren’t businesses and we aren’t customers, however, there are some things we can learn and apply. Those in the business world deal with people every day. Whether over the phone or face-to-face, we are seeing people. And given the current state of the world we live in, we can all do our part to shed some light on those around us. Take one or all of these characteristics and try to apply them each day at your place of work, and even in your home. Begin to practice them and make them a defining characteristic of who you are and how you treat others.
