Growing Pains
Dealing with Change in Your Business
Change happens. Whether we like it or not, the world will continue to spin and time will continue to pass. Advances in technology, medicine, communications, and various other facets of life will always occur. It is our duty to not only recognize those changes, but to be willing to embrace them in our own lives as well.
Change: More Than a Duty
Let’s begin by relating some terms here. Change has a slightly negative connotation,
especially when it comes to business functions. We hear the word “change” and
immediately think of the problems associated with it. The reality, however, can
cause a major, but necessary shift in perspective. Change isn’t just some duty
that we have to deal with every 5 years or so. Change is the natural occurrence
of growth in our lives and in the situations around us. Change can actually be
a very good thing for us. Now you should note, I’m not advocating that you go
and flip your world upside down tomorrow. I am simply inviting you into the
perspective that change is often accompanied by growth, which can predict
promising things for both you and your business.
The Need for Growth
Now that we see the correlation between change and growth, let’s look at the need for
growth in our business. It can be tempting to reach a certain goal or limit and
start setting up camp. We often reach milestones and get complacent, leaving
our aspirational mindset behind us. It is important that we never stop
re-evaluating our goals, especially after we achieve them. Growth from success
is great, but sometimes growth happens as a result of failure. Don’t be discouraged.
Use the failure as an opportunity to recognize the areas for growth and
improvement. Make necessary changes, and get to work. Growth is necessary.
Whether we just took a big hit or we just hit one out of the park.
Embracing Growth
When we see opportunities for growth and change, it is important that we don’t take
them lightly. What may seem like a small difference presently, could end up
making a major impact in the grand scheme of things. Fostering a mindset that
welcomes growth can be difficult, but also rewarding. The dangerous mindset is
one that is shut off to any change or growth. Let us be individuals and
businesses that are welcome to growth. Let us be people that see growth as an
opportunity rather than a duty. Let us embrace the fact that growth is
inevitable for success.
Encouraging Growth
The healthy mindset is one that is not only open to growth, but welcomes and encourages it.
Growth starts with recognizing the areas that need it. If we make it difficult
for people to point out those areas, we become very limited in our
opportunities for growth. One way to encourage growth is to have an open door
for criticism. Invite opportunities for others to give insight into different
areas of the business. Give people the opportunity to help you see the things
that you might have grown blind to. The funny thing, however, is that we don’t
naturally like criticism. We don’t like getting told the negative things about
us or about our business. But if we let our disdain towards criticism rule our
mindset, we will never see the growth we all want.
Growing Pains
I’ll say it again. Change happens. Whether we like it or not. With change and growth come the responsibility to work through it. There will be some discomfort that comes with it, but know that on the other end is a new and improved business model, piece of equipment, software system, or company philosophy. Time will continue to tick on, make sure you and your business are keeping up.
