The Importance of Seasonal Flower Care

The Importance of Seasonal Flower Care

The Importance of Seasonal Flower Care

How important is seasonal flower care? Here in Central Indiana, from May through September, staying on top of your flower beds is essential. Most beds should be visited two to three times each week during this flowering season. So, why so often? The answer is that with flowers, it’s not one-and-done. Your flower beds need watering, fertilization, weeds pulled, insecticides and fungicides applied, and curbside appeal maintained. Letting any of these slip for even a short time can be disastrous to your flower beds; here’s why.

5 Keys to Seasonal Flower Care

Watering

Watering is the lifeblood of any garden, especially during the warmer months when evaporation rates are high. You must be sure your seasonal flowers are receiving the water they need while at the same time being certain not to overwater. It’s hard to keep up with your flowers’ water needs if they’re not regularly inspected. A good rule of thumb is to water deeply, allowing the soil to absorb moisture to the root level.

Pro Tip: It’s critical to check your beds for water needs, even during rainy periods. They may be overwatered, or drainage could carry the needed water away.

Fertilizing

If you want your flowers to grow and display their most vibrant colors, they’ll need fertilization. Before you throw any ole fertilizer on your beds, look for products specifically formulated for your type of flowering plants. Then, follow the instructions carefully to avoid overfeeding, which can lead to nutrient imbalances. Using the right fertilizer and the correct amount of fertilization is critical. Too little won’t get the job done, and too much can damage the flowers. It’s always a good idea to ask a professional what the best fertilizer is for your specific plants.

Weed Control

It’s a war between weeds and flowers, and without intervention, the weeds will win this battle. Weeds compete with your seasonal flowers for essential nutrients and water, so regular weeding is essential to maintaining a healthy garden. Take the time during each visit to remove any weeds that have taken root.

Pro Tip: When weeding, be careful not to disturb the delicate root systems of your flowers.

Pest and Disease Management

Keep an eye out for signs of insect infestation or fungal diseases. They can spread in days, if not hours, and damage your seasonal blooms. Apply insecticides and fungicides as needed. Be sure to follow product instructions and minimize harm to beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.

Pro Tip: “Mulching around plants will go a long way toward reducing the ability of weeds to cause problems. Organic mulches tend to cool the soil, conserve soil moisture, and reduce weed germination.” — Purdue University Cooperative — Weed Control for the Garden

Curb Appeal

In addition to caring for your seasonal flowers, maintaining the overall appearance of your garden adds to its allure. Regularly tidying up the area and removing debris or dead foliage will keep your garden eye-catching. Curb appeal not only adds to the garden’s allure but also adds value to your property.

“There can be some fantastic pay-offs, like increasing the resale value of your home: 92% of realtors recommend that sellers improve their curb appeal before listing their home, with standard lawn care resulting in a 217% return on investment.” — Better Homes & Gardens Magazine

Pro Tip:  Consider adding decorative elements like garden ornaments to enhance the flower bed’s appearance.

Are You Ready?

With regular watering, fertilizing, weed control, pest management, and attention to curb appeal, your seasonal flowers will flourish, bringing joy to you and any passersby. So, gear up with your watering can and gardening gloves, and let’s make this summer a season to remember with a stunning display of seasonal blooms!

Of course, if all this weekly work doesn’t fit your schedule, we’re here for you. Yes, Berger Hargis can set you up with seasonal flower care of two to three weekly visits, doing all of the above, May through September!
